I believe It!

Deep in the mountains of West Virginia I was sitting in a small baptist church listening to a country pastor preach on the Word of God. I heard him say at least 20 times, "the Bible says it, I believe it!" Then a chorus of Amen's erupted all over the sanctuary. I admit I was one of them. However inside my spirit I was crying out, "tell them why"! I wish it was enough just to say because the Bible says it, we have reason enough to believe it. But not anymore. In this information age, we need to know in our spirit why we believe it. We need to know for ourselves so we can share it with others.

One of the things I wanted this pastor to tell everyone was how amazing the Bible is in its continuity. The Bible was written by forty different authors, living on three separate continents, speaking in three different languages, and spanning a time period of a thousand years, telling one story. It has complete thematic harmony, commonality, and consistency of information throughout the whole book. You could never go to a library and choose sixty-six books by forty authors and expect them to tell one story. It won't happen.

Another bit of information I would have liked to hear was how the Bible has been tested as authentic, biblical text just as all other historical documents. Historical documents are tested in three ways: the number of existing manuscripts, the dating of the manuscripts, and the proportion of variant readings. Let's look at just one of the three ways in greater detail. There are 24,000+ existing portions of the New testament manuscripts which ranks first in manuscript evidence. Second in manuscript evidence is Iliad, by Homer with 643 manuscripts. Wow! There is no comparison to those numbers (24,000 vs. 643).

Other ways we know the Bible is historical fact is through evidence from archaeology, early christian writers, and extra-biblical writers. For a further look into these evidences and manuscripts, please check out www.gospeloutreach.net and click on Why the Bible is the Word of God.

With all this great information available to me and to you about why the Bible is the Word of God, it still is not the reason I believe. I believe because my life has been changed by Jesus Christ. It was through the Bible that I was taught about this life-changing, life-giving power! Lives can be made new in this information age. It is He who can change your life today. You would be able to say yourself, "the Bible says it, and I believe it" because of your own personal experience which could never be challenged.

Lisa

Your Hidden Potential

Another year has come and gone. I don't count my years by my birthday or by New Year's Day, but by the first day of school. I marvel how my children are another year older already in a higher grade. I think about all the things we did this summer together and how thankful I am to spend it with them.

Then I am reminded of a conversation I had with a friend right after I made the decision to quit my job and stay at home with my son, Lee. My friend, a former co-worker, shared with me that she was the winner of a bet at work. You see, another co-worker and I were pregnant at the same time. She was older than me and everyone had it figured she wouldn't be back after having her baby. But no one believed it would be me.

I couldn't blame them for thinking that. When someone came in with a baby, I wasn't the one who went running up to them to hold their baby. I didn't come across as the "motherly type". And when I was trying to get pregnant, I even wondered myself. But God saw the mother I would become when I held my precious baby in my arms. He knew my heart and potential!

What would others say about you? Do you believe them? Or do you believe the One who made you! "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7)

Just for fun...visit a friend

In July, Kim and I visited a friend in Myrtle Beach, Somalia Bishop. Many of you might remember her from being a part of Mom's Connection well over a year ago. We traveled down on a Thursday, us and our four children. I can't tell you the car ride was fun but going down was an adventure for us. After arriving our friend rolled out the red carpet for us. We were treated like special guests of a four-star hotel. Somalia has the gift of hospitality!

For three days we visited the beach, went shopping, relaxed, talked, and ate plenty! All six of our children played real well together. On Sunday we visited her church and had a meeting with God. What a powerful presence! Visiting our friend was a gift from God. He enabled us to save the money to go, to be so well taken care of while there, to travel there and back safely, and to reconnect with a great friend.

Blessings,
Lisa

A Woman's Worth

Our society likes to put a price-tag on everything-- especially in economic times such as these. The world defines our worth with a paycheck. Our worldly reward...money.

I even saw a couple of years ago where a newsgroup had broken down a wife and mother's job into several jobs and tried to define a woman's worth through the salary she would make through these various jobs. The jobs they cited spanned from chauffeur to personal chef to therapist and many other professions in-between. Needless-to-say, today's woman was very high-grossing. Any other job would come with a nice-benefits package with vacation days, sick days and probably even a company car! But at the end of the day our benefits package is a happy child, a husband who feels valued and appreciated, and the satisfaction of a job well-done. That "benefit's package" means more to me then any perk I could receive from any company or organization.

Would that worldly company truly value us for what we are really worth? No, of course not! If they could find the labour for cheaper...they would. So why should we care what we are worth to them? Our self-worth should be defined at how God values us. To God you are a prized possession. In fact, you are so valued that "even the very hairs of your head are all numbered" (Matthew 10:30) Unfortunately, man will continue to try to place a price-tag on our "occupation" but the book of Job says, "Man does not comprehend it's worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living" (Job 28:13)

This means that no matter the earthly currency that man tries to value us at, our reward for being the wife-mother-friend with a heart for God will not be of this world. It will be far greater than anything man could possibly dream up. As I sit here planning out the day's schedule filled with my many "occupations", I am comforted to know that to God I am worth far more than I am to any earthly organization and that's what really matters.

Releasing to God

In June my son went away for a camping trip with the Royal Rangers at Bethel Assembly of God. He was gone a total of 2 1/2 days and 2 nights. I knew he was going to have the time of his life mostly because he loves the outdoors, fishing, and hanging out with other males. However this knowledge did not help my anxiety I had the whole time he was gone. Admittedly for the three days I felt uneasy. I couldn't sleep soundly. It didn't feel right laying my head down on my pillow with my baby boy not in the house.

As a faith-filled mom I know God loves my children even more than I do. They were lent to me for a short time to care for and raise. I pray daily over their safety, health, future, and complete well-being. I trust God! And this is easy to do when my children are within MY eyesight, under MY roof, and within MY grasp. It is quite a different story when their not.

As all of our children grow older they begin their own adventures of life without us. For some it starts when they go off to school with field trips and sleepovers. And it will eventually lead to driving, college, and marriage. If I have trouble with a camping trip, how will I handle all the rest?

I will do what I do with all the other matters in my life- I will let go and let God. I know when I continually release my children into God's hands, I will have peace. I don't want to limit God by keeping my children always within my reach. I want to give God full access to my children and keep trusting Him for their future. I'm trusting God that peace will come...

"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord" (1 Samuel 1: 27-28)

Lisa

Our Fun Summer!

We have had a lot of fun this summer!! With so many activities together, we have kept our children busy and happy! Above are a few pics of our recent trips to Cunningham Falls and Chuck E. Cheese.

The Seeds We Sow

Every plant has little seeds
That make others of its kind.
Apple seeds make apple trees
And they'll do it every time.

Seeds make flowers, shrubs, and trees.
Seeds make ferns, vines, and weeds.
What you plant is what you grow.
So be careful what you sow.

New Friends

It's always been easy for me to make friends. They were the kind of friends that would come and go whenever things got difficult or whenever money got tight. But this year I found different kinds of friends.

I attended Bethel Assembly of God one day in the beginning of this year. I signed an attendance card the first time I went and received a free gift. Little did I know that this would be the start of meeting great new friends and a new life. A few days later, someone called me from Bethel to tell me about the church and what they had to offer. I was told there was a mom's group and that they met twice a month and did many other things all year long. She said that the leader of the group would call me if I liked. Then Lisa Fraley called and we talked like I had known her forever. It was great!

When I went to my first meeting, I was a little scared because I wasn't sure what I was getting into. But it was great! Everyone there was nice and welcoming. I felt so comfortable like I knew some of the ladies forever. I knew I was going be fine. It's almost been a full year and I have made a lot of new and lasting friendships. The kind of friends that have been with me ALL year. They always have encouraging and uplifting words to say to me and always help no matter what.

I have always known the Lord. Sometimes I made it to church but not on a regular basis. Staying in touch with Mom's Connection makes me want more of God. Life is a little difficult now with me juggling my normal tasks and working an almost full time job but WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! I have been reminded of that all week from some of the mom's.

It's been wonderful that God has opened the door for great new friends and extra encouragement this year. I just would like to thank all the mom's in Mom's Connection and say that I will be back this year as well.

Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so.
Little one to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me.
The Bible tells me so.

For many of us this was the first song we ever learned. The song about how Jesus loves us. As we grow older and learn other worship songs, sometimes we leave this song behind us. We think it's reserved for only children. But it is in this song that we learn the biggest truth.

Ten years ago when I was in a church full of crying, heartbroken people, I heard Jesus Loves Me being sung by a soloist. It was there I felt the love of God pressed upon my spirit so much that it was palpable. I was at my father's funeral. This was before I started seeking God with all my heart. It was before I had ever accomplished anything for Him. This was when Jesus reminded me He loved me. That He was strong, when I felt so weak. There I sat in a church full of grief and heartache, yet felt God's love and peace.

I was reminded again over the weekend how Jesus still uses this song to reach out to us. No matter where we find ourselves we must remember the words of this song. It is a truth we have yet to fully grasp: Jesus' love for us!!!

Blessings,
Lisa

God's Groundhog

While I was praying a few mornings ago, I was interrupted by the sound of our gate being moved. I wondered who would be there so early in the morning and got up to investigate. All I saw was the tail end of a very fat goundhog scooting across the road. He must have been too fat to squeeze under the gate without bumping it. I paused for a few moments to watch him waddle a few feet, look around, waddle a little further, sniff the air and keep waddling and stopping all the way into my neighbors yard. It was so enjoyable just to watch the way he moved, that I started to think of why God made a groundhog. Was it just for the fun of it?

All of the marvels of God's creation, why are they here? God didn't have to make everything so complex, so unique. Every creature is different. Every detail, even down to the perfectly formed atom, is carefully crafted. Some creatures cannot even be seen by people, like the outrageous looking glowing fish in the deepest part of the ocean, but God knows they are there. There are still new discoveries of creatures every year, and how long has man been investigating and cataloguing creatures? All of this ran through my mind in the space of a few moments, and I was struck by how awesome God is.

What overwhelmed me the most, though, was that despite all of His immense power and majesty, He chooses to walk with me and listen to my problems. His attention to the smallest detail of creation reassures me. When compared to the workings of the universe, even my biggest difficulties seem miniscule, but God still cares. If He made a silly little groundhog and uses it in His plan of creation, He certainly cares for me.

Wilderness Mentalities

The people of Israel wandered around in the wilderness for forty years making what was actually an eleven-day journey. Why? Was it their enemies, their circumstances, the trials along the way or something entirely different that prevented them from arriving at their destination?

As I was pondering this situation, God gave me a powerful revelation that has helped me personally as well as thousands of others. The Lord said to me, "The Children of Israel spent forty years in the wilderness making an eleven-day trip because they had a 'wilderness mentality.'" "The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, You have dwelt long enough on this mountain." Deuteronomy 1:6.

We really shouldn't look at the Israelites with such astonishment because most of us do the same thing they did. We keep going around and around the same mountains instead of making progress. The result is, it takes us years to experience victory over something that could have and should have been dealt with quickly. I think the Lord is saying the same thing to you and me today that He said to the Children of Israel in their day; "You have dwelt long enough on the same mountain; it is time to move on." "And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on earth." Colossians 3:2

John's Testimony

"Then John [the Baptist] gave this testimony: 'I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.'"
John 1:32-34

God revealed to John the Baptist that Jesus was the Son of God. God continues to reveal to each of us who Jesus is and Jesus makes Himself known to us. It is this revelation that enables us to accept Jesus Christ into our hearts and lives. How has God done that for you? Maybe you were a child when God revealed Himself to you or maybe it was just last week. What I know for certain-God is still revealing Himself and his son to us today just as He did to John the Baptist.

Daddy's Servant

As I am cleaning up after dinner, my daughter looks at me and says so very sweetly, "mommy you're a servant." I just looked at her stunned. I wasn't quite sure what she meant. After all that's an odd thing to say for a six year old. I asked her what she meant by that statement and she says with a beautiful smile on her face, "you're daddy's servant".

I thought about what she said for days. I have to admit I didn't like it. I felt it a blow to my self-worth. Do I want to be considered a servant? Is that what my daughter thinks of me when I am trying to be a good wife and mother by cleaning the house and putting dinner on the table. My flesh resisted this statement as fact and yet my spirit within me questioned my dislike of it.

Finally I asked God what my problem is with her statement after all I am proud to be called God's servant. I have a longing in my heart to accomplish things for God and His Kingdom. I look forward to the day God says to me, "Well done good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21) Is it my pride that rebels against this word, servant? Cleanse me, Lord.

As I further examined my heart I realized that what bothered me most was being called my husband's servant. I felt an aversion to being considered my husband's servant rather than God's. But isn't that what I am when I am serving others? I am serving them as a greater service to God. Jesus "made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness...and became obedient to death" (Philippians 2:7-8). If Jesus can take on the nature of a servant, couldn't I?

I might not be covered in black with a white apron wrapped around my waist and a cap on my head but taking on the role of servant is exactly what God has asked me to do. I am encouraged in God's Word as I read, "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does" (Ephesians 6:7).

After taking a serious look at my heart, I felt it no longer beneath me to take on the title of servant in my home but rather grateful. Grateful to have the privilege to serve my husband and family. And as I made peace in my heart over being "daddy's servant", I spoke of it to my husband. It was then at dinner another night, my husband took it on himself to tell my daughter what my place is in our family. He said, "your mom is not my servant, but my helper and best friend and I could not do anything without her."

"Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:26

Blessings,
