Old Tyme Christmas in Historic Harpers Ferrry, WV



Harper's Ferry Olde Tyme Christmas is a yuletide celebration for the young and old. This small town drifts back in time to Christmas of the 1860's. Live greens, fruits, bows and luminaries will bedeck the shops, streets, and homes. The merchants will greet you in period costumes and a warm smile.
Historic St. Peter's Church will host man traditional musical events along with their famous living Nativity. The children's activities such as taffy, puppet show and ornament making will be held throughout the town.

Walking in Winter Wonderland 2010

Don your stocking caps and wrap those scarves tight as you take a magical stroll around through this winter wonderland! You're sure to be delighted by this light show that let's you see it from the inside out. Clearbrook Park will host this enchanted walking tour that encourages you to take your time enjoying the sights and sounds of the season. Warm up in the cabin-where you might run into santa- or with hot chocolate and cookies!
The event runs the entire month of December except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day beginning on Saturday, December 4 from 5:30-9:30 PM. Lights are out at 10 PM.
Fee: ages 12 and over: $4; ages 2-11: $3; 1 and under FREE

Directions:
Clearbrook Park is located on Route 11 North of Winchester. From I-81 take Exit 321, turn east off of highway, cross railroad tracks, right at stop sign onto Rt. 11 South. Park entrance in on the left. On opening night (and other nights that are very busy) the parking lot at the pool will be open. Follow the above directions, turning left at the stop sign and an immediate right onto Brucetown Road.
I went to Clearbrook's Winter Wonderland last December and it was wonderful. With all the things to do this Christmas season, this is one thing I don't want to miss! My children loved it too! The lights are beautiful and tucked inside a wood cabin with a warm fireplace is Santa and Mrs. Claus! It was very special!

Remainder events for 2010

Mom's Night Out-Monday, November 29 Holiday Shopping at the Prime Outlets in Hagerstown, MD. Meet at Bethel Assembly of God at 6pm for us to caravan together or meet at the outlets at 6:30 pm outside the food court. If you are planning to join us, contact Amanda Dagostino.

Our Christmas Party-Join Mom's Connection for our Annual Christmas Party held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in the MACE Building at Bethel Assembly of God. Registration begins at 9:30 AM.

In the busyness of the season treat yourself to a time of fun and fellowship with good friends. We will have activities for moms and children, giveaways, and a catered lunch at no cost to you available to only those who RSVP.

Lunch is catered by Angelo's Pizza & Deli serving lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and pizza. Drinks and dessert will be provided as well. All gifts purchased for the children on our Angel Tree need to be brought and dropped off in the designated room.

Remember Me

This video shows scenes from the movie, The Passion of the Christ.

I was listening to this song by Mark Schultz this morning, Remember Me. I felt so touched by the Holy Spirit. I felt God speaking to me that this is His heart cry to us "Remember Me". I thought of all the times I forget about Him.

Often prayer is just another thing on our to do list and we get up and go about our day and forget about Him. When we walk by our Bible sitting on the table and we just don't have time to pick it up and read it, we forget about Him. When we drive down the road in a hurry to get to where we are going and pass by the beautiful trees filled with the color of fall or when a beautiful sunset fills the sky and we barely notice, we forget about Him. When we pick up our children from Children's Church and don't notice their smiling faces or thank the ones that have ministered to them all morning teaching them about the Lord, we forget about Him. I could go on and on because there are just too many times I have forgotten about Him.

The interesting thing is that He never forgets about us. His Word says "Never will I leave you; Never will forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). Knowing that, shouldn't we make a point throughout our day to remember Him? His desire is to be in a relationship with us so let's walk close beside Him today.

What is the Eurasia Experience?

The Eurasia Experience is a special dramatic presentation coming to Bethel Assembly of God in Martinsburg, WV! It makes up a cast of over 60 people dressed in authentic Eurasian costumes who will present the sights, sounds, smells, and stories of Eurasia!! Eurasia comprises the traditional continents of Europe and Asia. It makes up almost 4.8 billion people which is more than 71 % of the world's population.

Join us in visiting Eurasia! During the interactive experience, we will take a walk through airport customs, a Eurasian marketplace (watch out for pick-pockets!), experience various cultures, and hear powerfully re-enacted dramatic monologues- authentic testimonies from Eurasian missionaries and locals. Our time together will be concluded by a meaningful message by a missionary to Eurasia.

The Jack-O-Lantern Gospel Story

A Christian tradition has started, in recent years, of telling the gospel story while carving a pumpkin. It goes something like this:

On the outside a pumpkin looks good and strong and beautiful. But, after cutting off the top, we look inside and see that it is full of slimy gunk. Similarly, on the outside, we may look good, but God can see inside our heart. "The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7b).

All of us have "gunk" inside. The Bible tells us, "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10). As we remove the inside of the pumpkin, we can share the Good News! The Bible teaches, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). God can make us clean on the inside! As we carve a happy face on the pumpkin, we are reminded that we should smile and be thankful for God's great goodness and love. ,he Bible says: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:5).

As we place a candle or a light inside the pumpkin, we can explain that Jesus doesn't want to leave us empty inside; He wants to fill our hearts with His love and His light. "For God, who said, `Let light shine out of darkness,' made His light shine in our hearts" (2 Corinthians 4:6a). And remember, we need to let our light shine for others to see, so they too can know Heaven's eternity. "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

"I pray that out of his glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:16-19).

Getting to Know....Missy Beard

I want to start by saying how honored I am to have a friend like Missy. Missy Beard is a loving person, and like all of us has her ups and downs. But I have rarely seen her without a smile on her face. She is a great mom of 2 beautiful boys: Matthew, 10 and Aidan, 6.

She is a very strong person. She turns to the Lord for things in her life. In Missy's words this is what a relationship with the Lord means to her, “Jesus Christ is the reason I live. He's peace amidst the storm, calm during the chaos, joy, strength, and happiness, and the best Lover ever!”
One of her favorite Bible verses is Romans 8:28 " For we know that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose." She also likes Romans 8:38-39 "For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God; which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Also, Psalm 31:24 "Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord." These are words to live by. Nothing like the word of God for encouragement.

Some of Missy's hobbies are reading a good book, writing, and baking yummy goodies with her boys. There is nothing like time with mommy. The music of choice for her is TobyMac, KJ-52, Newsboys, Skillet, Hawk Nelson, Kutless, Aidan's make-believe band "The Cryboys" (Aidan's make-believe band). There is also nothing like a child's imagination.

Her favorite things about being in Mom's Connection is being able to connect with other moms with similar interests, abilities, etc. and "being able to completely be yourself with no discrimination or judgement." Which is how it should be in a group of women, that even though we are different, are all alike in alot of ways. We share a bond together.

Holding Your Heart

I am 28 years old and headed to the cardiologist with a heart monitor strapped to my chest and stomach. Something is definitely wrong with this picture. Since my heart palpitations have begun it has been really easy to down play them or ignore them. I mean nothing serious could possibly be wrong! Yet here I am after having an ECG done on my heart and wearing this monitor for 24 hours heading in for a "consultation".

As I was driving the devil was really trying to hammer my spirit down by bringing up thoughts of what could be wrong and definitely not allowing me any thoughts of peace. So I flipped on the radio only to hear the singer praising the Lord by singing "You will be safe in his arms, safe in his arms the HANDS that hold the world ARE HOLDING YOUR HEART". At that moment the spirit of God fell so heavy in the car and I had such an immeasurable peace! As the radio kept play it finished with "when everything is falling apart you will be safe in his arms". How wonderful to know that my "heart" which has been acting up is safe in the arms of our God and Saviour who spoke our entire world into existence. Surely he can take care of my heart! I wonder how many of us are holding on to things and worrying when we just need to let God hold our "heart"!

A Mother's Love

My oldest daughter believes that I love her best. She is right. After all, she is my firstborn. When they put her in my arms, I could hardly believe that there was a more perfect being in the world. She looks just like her dad, but thinks more like me. We love to shop for antiques together, take in an art show, while away hours together in a bookstore. Besides being dazzled by her beauty, I am constantly amazed by her talent. She is funny and smart. She was a wonderful child; she is a spectacular adult. I am in awe of her.

What she doesn't realize, however, is that it is my second daughter that I love best. The moment I laid eyes on her, my heart opened up in a way I could not imagine. She has all the beauty of her sister, but with a heart that is more open to the world than anyone I have ever known. There is a legend in our family that she was born smiling, and those of us who were at her birth know that it is true. She is the sunshine our family revolves around. She makes me a kinder person. It is an honor to be her mother.

What my two daughters don't know is that I love my third child best. He is everything that a mother could ever want. A kind and sentimental son, one who is not afraid to give a hug or say a nice thing. He looks like me-I can actually see myself staring out of those clear brown eyes. He has an ability to see the world with a clear-headed insight I could never imagine in one so young. His views amaze me. I can't wait until he comes home, so I can listen to him talk.

Of course, none of them realize that I love my fourth child best. He is quite literally the soul of our family. He has his dad's blue eyes that turn brilliant when he laughs and deepen to a soft gray when he is thoughtful. He has a beautiful mind that never ceases questioning and searching. I am always learning something from him. The depth of his understanding astonishes me.

It is one of the paradoxes of motherhood that one child comes and fills your heart completely, but when another comes, you find your heart filled again. A mother's heart seems to have the ability to expand endlessly so that each child finds a place there that is theirs and theirs alone.

Every one of my children is my favorite. I love every one of them most of all. Each one is perfect to me. It is my right. I am their mother.

Pumpkin Patch

On Tuesday, October 19 at 12:30 in the afternoon join us at Old McDonald's Pumpkin Patch in Inwood, WV. There is lots to do with a playground including the kiddie korn kastle, hayride, double barrel tube slides, antique tractor display, corn maze (8 acre), and sorghum maze (5 acre), and petting zoo with chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits, llamas, and pigs.

Changing our childcare for the better!

We started something new for Mom's Connection~ having moms help out in childcare. This was not a decision we took lightly as we understand how much we need the break. However, the pros outweighed the cons. There's no better way to get-to-know another mom than to first meet her child(ren). We can save our budget for activities, supplies, and parties. Working together with your Care Circle is a great relationship-building activity that helps us connect with each other. You get to extend a hand of love to a child and bless a mom. Thank you to everyone for your willingness and great attitude!!

Sharon Doerk had this to say about helping in our childcare this past Tuesday:

Wanted to let you know how much fun Kim and I had providing Child Care for our first Mom's Connection meeting. I got to hang out with the 2 year olds and Kim was in the 3 year old room. A few ladies that provide child care during Sunday services showed up to help out, too. I know we are short handed this semester and each Care Circle will take turns providing child care. I had 8 toddlers in our room and most were the group that I get to see the second Sunday of every month. They are always a breeze to be around and get along great. I know most moms prefer the infant room, as they love to love on those precious babies. But, I gotta tell ya, I LOVE the 2 year olds. They slide, they play, they snack, they help pick up toys (as long as you ask them too). They also love to just sit and read a book with you and even sit on your lap and run a toy car up and down your arm.

I know we all look forward to our mom time at Mom's Connection. We all need a break. But, it is such a joy to be around these kids and to get the hugs when they are picked up by mom at the end of the meeting. It is so cool to watch them play together and figure out how to get along. It's fun to listen to them communicate in their own kid-way. The time goes by so quickly and you still get to fellowship with other moms, since we usually have 2 or more moms/helpers in each room. The strange part is: you do still get a break. For that couple of hours, you don't have to think about cleaning, cooking, laundry, or errands. You can be a kid again.

I guess I just didn't realize how much fun it would be.

During our vacation this year a member of my family (who will remain nameless) made a conscious decision NOT to put on sunscreen when we were spending the day at the beach. Repeatedly during the day I kindly mentioned how hot the sun was and offered the sunscreen. Needless to say before the day was out the consequence of spending the whole day in the sun was taking it's effect. For several days I endured listening to the complaints of this sunburn. Even after arriving home I caught myself thinking of this comical choice. It came to my mind so much that I found myself questioning God about it. Then He spoke...

"You do the same thing" came the voice of God across my mind. I said out loud, "I do not! I always put sunscreen on!" Then as soon as the words were out of my mouth, God placed upon my spirit exactly what He was talking about. He reminded me of an incident that happened because I didn't protect myself. He reminded me how I was hurt, how often I complained about it, and how long it took me to heal. "Ouch!" Just like my family member I made the same choice.

God used this incident to speak to me about my habit of going it alone when things appeared of little importance or just for fun. I'd go without my sunscreen on and then I wonder why I came home burnt. God did not say the incident would not have occurred but I should not have been surprised by it and in the future I need to be prepared. If we don't want to get burnt in this world by people or circumstances, we need to put on the full armor of God. We do this by spending time in God's presence, asking Him to direct our paths in prayer and preparing ourselves in the Word, the Bible.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Ephesians 6:10-17

Discussing Intelligent Design with our children

The theory of evolution may dominate biology instruction in public schools today, but you can equip your kids to defend their faith in God as the Creator. A strong spiritual foundation coupled with a solid understanding of God will prepare your child to resist a Darwinian worldview.

Ask your child:
~If I dump a box of LEGO pieces on the floor, what do you think the LEGO's will make? Why wouldn't they fall out in the shape of a robot?

~If I put the LEGO blocks and the robot directions together for a few days, would I eventually find an amazing creation? Why not? What do you need in order to make something?

~What would you think if someone told you that everything in the world is here because all the building blocks had been dumped together? Can things be built by chance? Think of everything that exists-from a bug to an iPod to a person. Does anything exist that wasn't made by someone?

~Who is our Creator? Why is it important to know that God created you and has a plan for you?

Our first meeting this fall...

Tuesday, September 28 Topic Meeting- Join us at Bethel Assembly of God in Martinsburg, WV (just past City Hospital) in the MACE building (large activity building behind the church) in room 109 (large center room on first floor) from 9:45- 11:45 AM. We meet for a time of brunch, prayer, and discussion groups.

During our first meeting three moms from our group will be speaking about issues close to their heart. We have the privilege to hear Janine DiGiovanni speak on "Your child's learning style", Donnis Lloyd speak on "How food impacts behavior", and Missy Beard speak on "Autism". You do not want to miss it!

To kick off our opening meeting, please bring a snack to share with everyone!

In October our Care Circles will begin a discussion based on the book "the Worn Out Woman, When your life is full and your spirit is empty." Here is an excerpt:

I am amazed at all they are trying to balance--caring for children; fixing meals; cleaning; decorating and maintaining their homes; volunteering at school, church, and community activities; hosting get-togethers; balancing finances; working at full-time or part-time jobs; loving their husbands; caring for aging parents; and seeing all the other aspects of their daily lives.

I worry that many women are working at 120 percent of their capacity and feeling guilty because they are not doing more. That's probably true of you as well. You take what you do seriously and try to do the best you can. I know how responsible, caring, diligent, and active you are, but your life is so busy that you run out of energy long before the day is over.

Dear worn-out woman, you can't do it all, nor do you have to!

Extraordinary Love

So I'm standing at the edge of the road waving to my son as he steps onto the big yellow bus. After the bus pulls away, two of the neighbor girls peek around from behind the mailboxes and with tears in their eyes say, "Missy, we missed the bus! Can you take us to school?" Instantly I begin to reprimand them for standing at the bus stop and still not catching the bus. How dare they be so distracted and inattentive? I sent them home to have their parents drive them to school. I didn't have time for such nonsense. I have to go to work this morning and I haven't had breakfast yet. I'm nauseous, PMSing with a load of cramps. As I walk home I start telling myself why I did the right thing. Both of these girls are being raised by their father only. I know for a fact that the one dad sleeps while I walk his daughter to the bus stop every morning. I'm a single parent too. Why should I have to take care of my two kids and everyone else's as well? Neither one of these dads would help my kids. And besides they might even try to say I'm kidnapping the girls if I put them in my car to take them to school. As soon as I finished rationalizing and making excuses, the Holy Spirit began to deal with me and gently spoke "Extraordinary love".

He reminded me of a verse that says we are to be a father to the fatherless- that also includes being a mother to the motherless. No matter how tired or busy Jesus was He always made time for people. His extraordinary love is bursting through every word, every thought, every action to mankind. It was extraordinary love that nailed Jesus to the cross. If He was willing to give up everything for us because He loves us, why should we do any less? So what if we're busy or it inconveniences us?! It is in these small sacrifices that extraordinary love can be seen and heard. Extraordinary love that comes from above has the power to transcend every barrier, to penetrate every stronghold, to heal every wound, to melt any heart, to touch any life. We just have to be willing and obedient.

So starting that day I made a conscious effort to show these two girls extraordinary love. It wasn't anything huge or amazing but life-changing nonetheless. Little things such as giving them my clothes and purses I no longer needed, braiding their hair, giving them snacks, asking how their day went, taking the time to love them. And now that an unfortunate accident has left my ankle broken and I am unable to walk, these same two little girls take turns pushing me in my wheelchair to the bus stop and give me hugs and say prayers with me before leaving for school. Funny thing how extraordinary love comes around full circle. Just at a time in my life when I needed it most. See, that's how love works. That's what this life is all about-pure, honest, unfailing, extraordinary love.

Getting to Know...Tiffany Bowers

Tiffany Bowers is all around a great person to be around. She is an encourager with a sympathetic ear, a willing heart, and a ready smile. I have really enjoyed getting to know her over the past year and I am thrilled to be able to feature her this month.

Tiffany has two children, Colton (3) and Kayla (6). She is a very devoted and patient mother. Her latest special project is working with autistic children to help the children and their families enjoy special activities together such as movies and other outings.

I asked her about her hobbies and interests and she replied, "Well, I really like photography, I love to take pictures. I love to capture just the perfect moment. I also love all my special projects." Her favorite personal hobby is surfing the web. She loves to see all of "the different takes on things online." She finds some of them "very humorous". She loves music and her favorite genre is country. She said, "I was born and raised in the south and a lot of the country songs bring me back home." Her favorite artist is Martina McBride. Her latest favorite quote is, "Some people walk in the rain, and others just get wet. I personally like to dance in the rain!"

Tiffany's favorite thing about Mom's Connection is, "That I can be around other moms, and know that we can all give something back to each other and get back from it too. At Mom's Connection I feel a part of a group of 'Real' moms not 'Susie Homemaker' moms."

I asked her what her relationship with the Lord means to her and she replied, "I am soul searching I guess. I have been more spiritually involved in the church in the last 4 months than I have been in my whole life and I was raised in "church". But... it's not the building that makes you a Christian. I am looking to God more now than ever to bring me through the good and the bad. I want to bring my kids up in the Lord. I want them to know him and believe in him."

Her favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 20:15, which says, "This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says: "Listen! I am going to bring on this city and the villages around it every disaster I pronounced against them because they were stiff-necked and would not listen to my words" About this verse she says, "Does that sound harsh?? If you read the whole story what it is telling you is to believe and listen to what God himself has to tell you. He is real. He is Holy. He is the one that we need to listen to."

There will be a kiddie korner, inflatables, face painting, balloons, bingo, child ID badges, safety seat checks, train rides, dunk tank fundraiser, competitive games, eating contests, relays, special music, Brothers Forever Concert, and Fireworks to end the evening!!!

Woman's Health Awareness Forum

I want to extend every one of you an invitation to a Woman's Health Awareness Forum this evening, Monday, August 30 at 6:30 PM at Bethel Assembly of God in the Mace building, rm 109. Most of the time we are sure to take care of everyone else in our household except ourselves. It's important to take the time for your health. There will be a seasoned professional from the Shenandoah Women's Health Center speaking to us (lasting approx. 30 minutes). There will be a time to ask questions as well. As Mom's Connection is a group for woman we have never done anything like this before but I believe it will be beneficial for us. Of course we will have refreshments afterwards. Please invite other woman to join you as this is for all woman.

I know many of you had the opportunity to meet Vida Sackey-Duah, a nursing student at Mountain State University, at our Back to School Pool Bash. As part of a class she is taking she needed to put together this forum. She chose to do it on women's health. She is a lovely person and I hope we can support her. Thank you.

Releasing our children to God...

Just spending a week covering our children in prayer is not enough. There are so many areas of their lives that need the touch of God. However when we do all we can to love, care, and pray over our children, in the end we must release them to God. Stormie Omartian says it best, "We can't be everywhere. But God can. We can't see everything. But God can. We can't know everything. But God can. No matter what age our children are, releasing them into God's hands is a sign of our faith and trust in Him and is the first step toward making a difference in their lives." Let's pray...

Lord,
I come to You in Jesus' name and give (name of child) to You. I'm convinced that You alone know what is best for him (her). You alone know what he (she) needs. I release him (her) to You to care for and protect, and I commit myself to pray for everything concerning him (her) that I can think of or that You put upon my heart. Teach me how to pray and guide me in what to pray about. Help me not to impose my own will when I'm praying for him (her), but rather enable me to pray that Your will be done in his (her) life.
Thank You that I can partner with You in raising him (her) and that I don't have to do it alone. I'm grateful that I don't have to rely on the world's unreliable and ever-changing methods for child rearing, but that I can have clear directions from Your Word and wisdom as I pray to You for answers.
Thank You, Lord, for the precious gift of this child. Because Your Word says that every good gift comes from You, I know that You have given him (her) to me to care for and raise. Help me to do that. Show me places where I continue to hang on to him (her) and enable me to release him (her) to Your protection, guidance, and counsel. Help me not to live in fear of possible dangers, but in the joy and peace of knowing that You are in control. I rely on You for everything, and this day I trust my child to You and release him (her) into Your hands.
Amen.

Happy Birthday, Julia Bivens!

Let's pray over our child's room...

We have lifted up our child(ren) this week while they have been at school. Now let's pray over our child's room so when they come home their room will be spiritually clean. Just think about all they come in contact with during the day especially in public school. We don't want them to bring anything home that shouldn't be. Let's pray...

Lord,
I invite Your Holy Spirit to dwell in this room, which belongs to (name of child). You are Lord over heaven and earth, and I proclaim that You are Lord over this room as well. Flood it with Your light and life. Crowd our any darkness which seeks to impose itself here, and let no spirits of fear, depression, anger, doubt, anxiety, rebelliousness, or hatred (name anything you've seen manifested in your child's behavior) find any place here. I pray that nothing will come into this room that is not brought by You, Lord. If there is anything here that shouldn't be, show me so it can be taken out.
Put Your complete protection over this room so that evil cannot enter here by any means. Fill this room with Your love, peace, and joy. I pray that my child will say, as David did, "I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set nothing wicked before my eyes" (Psalm 101:2-3). I pray that You, Lord, will make this room a holy place, sanctified for Your glory.

Woman's Health Awareness Forum

Monday, August 30 In partnership with Vida Sackey-Duah, a nursing student at Mountain State University, would like to invite you to a woman's health awareness forum with a seasoned professional from the Shenandoah Women's Health Center at 6:30 PM at Bethel Assembly of God in the Mace building, room 109 (lasting approx. 30 minutes). Light refreshments immediately following.

Praying for our children this first week of school...

We know as adults, especially now, how important friends can be in our lives. The people we choose to surround ourselves with can either build us up or tear us down. The Bible says, "The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray" (Proverbs 12:26). This is why we take the time to pray that our children will make the right friends this school year and be drawn to the right role models. Join me...

Lord,
I lift up (name of child) to You and ask that You would bring godly friends and role models into his (her) life. Give him (her) the wisdom he (she) needs to choose friends who are godly and help him (her) to never compromise his (her) walk with You in order to gain acceptance. Give me Holy Spirit-inspired discernment in how I guide or influence him (her) in the selection of friends. I pray that You would take anyone who is not a godly influence out of his (her) life or else transform that person into Your likeness.

Your Word says, "He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed" (Proverbs 13:20). Don't let my child be a companion of fools. Enable him (her) to walk with wise friends and not have to experience the destruction that can happen by walking with foolish people. Deliver him (her) from anyone with an ungodly character so he (she) will not learn that person's ways and set a snare for his (her) own soul.

Whenever there is grief over a lost friendship, comfort him (her) and send new friends with whom he (she) can connect, share, and be the person You created him (her) to be. Take away any loneliness or low self-esteem that would cause him (her) to seek out less than God-glorifying relationships.

In Jesus' name I pray that You would teach him (her) the meaning of true friendship. Teach him (her) how to be a good friend and make strong, close, lasting relationships. May each of his (her) friendships always glorify You.

This first week of school, let's pray...

Yesterday I felt it imperative to pray first over our children's safety. I think it's our first concern. I know it's mine. For today, let's pray for our children's school, teachers, classes, and their mind.

Lord,
I pray that (name of child) will have a deep reverence for You and Your ways. May he (she) hide Your word in his (her) heart like a treasure, and seek after understanding like silver or gold. Give him (her) a good mind, a teachable spirit, and an ability to learn. Instill in him (her) a desire to attain knowledge and skill, and may he (she) have joy in the process. Above all, I pray that he (she) will be taught by You, for Your Word says that when our children are taught by You they are guaranteed peace. You have also said, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction" (Proverbs 1:7). May he (she) never be a fool and turn away from learning, but rather may he (she) turn to You for the knowledge he (she) needs.


I pray he (she) will respect the wisdom of his (her) parents and be willing to be taught by them. May he (she) also have the desire to be taught by the teachers You bring into his (her) life. Handpick each one, Lord, and my they be godly people from whom he (she) can easily learn. Take out of his (her) life any teacher who would be an ungodly influence or create a bad learning experience. Let him (her) find favor with his (her) teachers and have good communication with them. Help him (her) to excel in school and do well in any classes he (she) may take. Make the pathways of learning smooth and not something with which he (she) must strain and struggle. Connect everything in his (her) brain the way it is supposed to be so that he (she) has clarity of thought, organization, good memory, and strong learning ability.

I say to him (her) according to Your Word, "Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge" (Proverbs 23:12). "May the Lord give you understanding in all things" (2 Timothy 2:7). Lord, enable him (her) to experience the joy of learning more about You and Your world.

The First Day of School!!!

When my children were five years old, this was a day I dreaded-the first day of school. Now after a few years under their belts, I'm not upset anymore. There are moments I breath a sigh of relief. However, I still am concerned over them. Who will they sit with on the bus? Will their teacher like them? What does this school year hold? With that in mind, I bring all my burdens for them to God in prayer.

So this week I would like to focus on praying for our children. Whether you're teaching them at home, sending them off to Pre-K, Elementary, or "Ahhh" Middle School, lets agree together that God will look after our children's mind, body, and soul.

Lord,
I lift (name of child) up to You and ask that You would put a hedge of protection around her (him). Protect her (his) spirit, body, mind, and emotions from any kind of evil or harm. I pray specifically for protection from accidents, disease, injury, or any other physical, mental, or emotional abuse. I pray that she (he) will make her (his) refuge "in the shadow of Your wings" until " these calamities have passed by" (Psalm 57:1). Hide her (him) from any kind of evil influences that would come against her (him). Keep her (him) safe from any hidden dangers and let no weapon formed against her (him) be able to prosper. Thank You, Lord, for Your many promises of protection. Help her (him) to walk in Your ways and in obedience to Your will so that she (he) never comes out from under the umbrella of that protection. Keep her (him) safe in all she (he) does and wherever she (he) goes.

Sunday, August 15 Prayer Walk- Join us at Bethel Assembly of God in the sanctuary at 6:30 PM for a prayer walk to rededicate the church. The whole family is invited to participate including your little ones. Bring your strollers as we will be walking around the church campus!

Meet...Sharon Doerk

It is my sincere pleasure to introduce to you for our feature this month a lady that I feel is a genuine treasure. Sharon Doerk is a great friend and has become one of my go-to-girls. She has a real heart for other people and is very compassionate and a great encourager. She is also a teacher in the 2-3 year old room during Sunday morning service at Bethel Assembly of God in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Sharon and her husband, Brian have been married for five and a half years and met through a mutual friend. They became friends and then more. She says, "Brian is my soul mate and best friend". They have two children, Olivia (3) and Jacob (18 months).

Her hobbies and interests include gardening, cooking, music, physical fitness and her children. She enjoys all kinds of music with the exception on rap and hip-hop. She says, "I worked in the music industry for many years and had the opportunity to work with various artists. You never know what you will find in my CD player!" She has recently been listening to a lot of Christian pop/rock such as Casting Crowns and Phil Wickham and some 80's music.

Sharon's favorite thing about Mom's Connection is getting out of the house and getting to know other moms. She says, "I've learned so much in the little time I've been involved with Mom's Connection. It's a great group of ladies!"
I asked her what her relationship with the Lord means to her and she said she knows she is becoming a better person, wife, mom and friend because of the relationship she is building with Him. She knows that she can go to Him and confess her spiritual "slip-ups" and ask forgiveness and strength to not do it again. She said, "It is very important for me to start and end my day with prayer and reflection. He is my rock and my strength."

Her favorite Bible verse is Matthew 6:34, "Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow will take care of itself..." This verse reminds her to "not rush each day but to enjoy it for all it has to offer, get a good night's rest and be ready for whatever life and the Lord has for you the next day."

A Valuable Woman

"And the LORD said to him, 'What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them.'" Numbers 27:6-7

Do you sometimes think that God is limiting you rather than opening doors of opportunity because you are a woman? Then you believe the wrong press about him. God is the one who allowed women to inherit the land. God is the one who put the Savior of the world into a woman's womb. Jesus is the Lord who appeared to women first after his resurrection. God is not biased toward men; on the contrary, he teaches us that men and women have equal value in his sight. When you give him your devotion, when you sit at his feet and learn from him (see Luke 10:38-42), he'll treat you with dignity and give you the delights of your heart.

As a woman, are there particular qualities of God that you relate to differently than a man would? What is your view of how God treats women?

Tuesday, August 3 Cunningham Falls, Thurmont, MD. Meet at the church at 9:15 AM to caravan together or meet us there at 10 AM.

If you are planning to join us bring a packed lunch, a beach blanket, sunscreen and the kids toys. Then head to the lake for a day of playing in the sand and swimming. The lake has many shallow parts which are perfect for young children, but also has deeper areas roped off for older children.

There is a snack pavilion for those of you that hate to pack a lunch and bathrooms right off the beach. It costs $4 per person, however anyone in a booster seat or car seat is FREE!

Tuesday, August 10 Discovery Museum in Hagerstown, MD has been canceled. Another event will take it's place to be announced.

Have Fun at Family Camp!

Family Camp at the Potomac AG Campground located in Falling Waters, WV is next week beginning Sunday, July 18 at 7 PM with a concert with The Couriers! Then continuing Monday through Friday at 10 AM with classes for all ages (Nursery - Adult). Bible Teacher Brenton Osgood will be ministering to the adults. Afterwards pack a lunch to eat on campus or eat in the cafeteria then stay to enjoy the playground and large in ground pool (opened 1-5 PM daily).

Come back each evening for the 7 PM service with Evangelist and Pastor Sam Rijfkogel. Music ministry each evening will feature district churches.

A Chance to Give...

Bethel Assembly of God, in being good neighbors with our friends in the Martins Landing Community, is having a Back to School Bash on Friday, August 13 at 5 PM where school supplies will be distributed along with pizza and refreshments.

In order for this to be successful, school supplies need to be purchased and donated. There are several ways we can help! You can purchase school supplies and bring them to Bethel A/G. Come out to Five Below in Martinsburg, WV this Friday evening or Saturday between 10 AM- 2 PM to purchase and donate school supplies. Or if you shop at Five Below beginning this Friday, July 16 through July 26 and present a Bethel flyer, 10% of the proceeds will be donated to purchase school supplies!

Also on Saturday, July 31 Bethel is having the Martins Landing Community a Cook Out/ Block Party beginning at 10:30 AM. If you would like to participate in either event, please contact Amy Brooks at amysstadiumshere@aol.com or call 304-279-0347.

Plowing the Field

"One day in early summer I walked past a lovely meadow. The grass was as soft, thick, and beautiful as an immense green Oriental rug. At one end of the meadow stood a fine old tree that served as a sanctuary for countless wild birds, whose happy songs seemed to fill the crisp, sweet air. I saw two cows who lay in the shade as the very picture of contentment. And down by the road, eye-catching dandelions mingled their gold with the royal purple of the wild violets. I leaned against the fence for a long time, feasting my hungry eyes and thinking in my soul that God never made a more beautiful place than this lovely meadow. The next day I passed that way again, and to my great dismay, the hand of the destroyer had been there. A farmer with a large tractor, which was now sitting idle in the meadow, had in one day inflicted terrible devastation. Instead of seeing the soft, green grass, I now saw the ugly, bare, and brown earth. Gone were the dandelions and the pretty violets. And instead of the multitude of singing birds, there were now only a few, who were industriously scratching the ground for worms. In my grief I said, "How could anyone spoil something so beautiful?" Then suddenly my eyes were opened, as if by some unseen hand, and I saw a vision. The vision was that of ripe corn ready for harvest. I could see the giant, heavily laden stalks in the autumn sun, and I could almost hear the music of the wind as it swept across the golden tassels. And before I realized it, the bare earth took on a splendor it did not have the day before. Oh, if only we would always catch the vision of the abundant harvest when the great Master Farmer comes, as He often does, to plow through our very souls----uprooting and turning under that which we thought most beautiful and leaving only the bare and the unlovely before our agonizing eyes." selected

Why should I be frightened and surprised by the plow of the Lord, which makes deep furrows in my soul? I know He is not some arbitrary or irrational farmer---His purpose is to yield a harvest. Samuel Rutherford

With all the changes taking place in our church this passage spoke so clearly to me about where we are. Sometimes we cling to things in our personal lives and in our church that we feel are most beautiful, just like that beautiful meadow the traveler described. But what does God, "The Master Farmer", see when he looks at that same meadow. He sees that though it is beautiful to look at it is wild, untamed, and accomplishing very little. But He also sees its great potential. That if plowed down to the fertile soil, turned over and over until it is ready, planted with new seeds, watered and cared for, one day it will produce a bountiful crop capable of feeding a multitude.

We need to allow God's Holy Spirit to expand our vision beyond what is on the surface in order to think in line with the bigger things He desires to accomplish in and through us. That starts with allowing God to do some plowing in our own souls so we are ready and prepared to share in His vision for our church and the role He desires us to play in the accomplishment of that vision. As James 3:17 & 18 says "But wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Making Room In Our Heart

Robert Boyd Munger, author of the book "My Heart Christ's Home" describes his relationship with Jesus in terms of various rooms in a house. When referring to his time with God he compared it to entering the drawing room. Here is an excerpt:

"We walked next in the drawing room. This room was rather intimate and comfortable. I liked it. It had a fireplace, overstuffed chairs, a bookcase, sofa, and a quiet atmosphere. He also seemed pleased with it. He said, 'This is indeed a delightful room. Let us come here often. It is secluded and quiet and we can have fellowship together.' Well naturally, as a young Christian I was thrilled, I could not think of anything I would rather do than have a few minutes apart with Christ in intimate comradeship. He promised, 'I will be here every morning early. Meet with Me here and we will start the day together.' So morning after morning, I would come downstairs to the drawing room and He would take a book of the Bible...open it and then we would read together. He would tell me of its riches and unfold to me its truths... They were wonderful times together. In fact, we called the drawing room the "withdrawing room". It was a period when we had our quiet time together."

"But little by little, under the pressure of many responsibilities, this time began to be shortened... I began to miss a day now and then... I would miss it two days in a row and often more. I remember one morning when I was in a hurry... As I passed the drawing room, the door was ajar. Looking in I saw a fire in the fireplace and the Lord sitting there... 'Blessed Master, have You been here all these mornings?' 'Yes', He said, 'I told you I would be here every morning to meet with you.' Then I was even more ashamed. He had been faithful in spite of my faithlessness. I asked His forgiveness and He readily forgave me..."

"He said, 'The trouble with you is this: You have been thinking of the quiet time, of the Bible study and prayer time, as a factor in your own spiritual progress, but you have forgotten that this hour means something to me also.'

When I read this I was given a renewed sense of the importance of prayer. Prayer is a privilege. Prayer is a time for me to grow, to make my needs known before God, but most importantly it is fellowship with God. It is a time to draw near to Him in an intimate relationship. He created us for this very reason, to have fellowship with Him. I never thought about our time together being as important to Him as it was to me or even more so. I am continually astounded by His love for me and the desire He has just to meet with me and talk with me, to tell me all about Himself and reveal to me His desires for my life and my future, and to just shower His love on me. John 15:15 says "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you." This scripture speaks to the Lord's heart towards us and His desire for intimate friendship and fellowship with us, to make known the mysteries of heaven to us. Have you made room in your heart for Jesus today? In your busy schedule have you made time to stop by the drawing room and sit and talk with the Lord? He is waiting there for us desiring to meet with us. Don't miss out on the opportunity to sit in an overstuffed chair by the cozy fire and share quiet time with Him.

Activities for Independence Day!

In celebration of Independence Day, the following activities will be held in Martinsburg and surrounding areas:

Saturday, July 3 from 1-6 PM Jefferson Memorial Park Pool in Charles Town WV- Admissions $5 per family with free lemonade and popsicles.

Saturday, July 3 at 7:30 PM Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD, will have a concert featuring the Maryland Sympony Orchestra performing their "Salute to Independence" and fireworks at 9:30 PM. The event will take place behind the park's visitors' center in an open field area. Those who attend should bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. Everyone is welcome to bring a picnic, water, bug repellent, and a flashlight for getting back to their cars. There will be concessions for concertgoers.

Saturday, July 3 The Blue Ridge Patriots of Berkeley County and We The People of Jefferson County will hold their second annual "Tri-County Patriot Picnic- In Honor of Those Who Serve" from 11 AM- 5 PM at Poor House Farm Park. An honor ceremony will be held at 1 PM. The event will feature live music, children activities, and more.

Sunday, July 4 from 1-9 PM War Memorial Park. Activities include a moon bounce, face painting, mini-train, pony rides and fireworks.

Sunday, July 4 at Bethel Assembly of God parking lot free drinks and hotdogs will be given out and a great view of the Martinsburg fireworks beginning at 8:30 PM.

Sunday, July 4 parade and community picnic in Shepherdstown, WV beginning at 3 PM. The parade begins at the top of German Street and proceed to Rumsey Memorial Park with picnic at Rumsey Park. Admission is free. The event will feature a water slide, three-legged race, leap frog races, live entertainment and more.
